Perfect Hostess Gift: DIY Kitchen Towels

Looking for the perfect hostess gift? These Hostess DIY Kitchen Towels are perfect for any foodie in your life!

This DIY Kitchen Towel is the perfect hostess gift, made for those who run on love and strong coffee.

There is something really exciting about putting together your home. Giving it personal touches that are a reflection of you and your family, finding furniture that makes a room feel cozy and gives your guests a place to relax and feel at home when they're with you. It's a fun process to go through, and even more fun when you can share it with others once the projects are completed.

Since hospitality and cooking are such an important part of hosting family and friends, I wanted to make something decorative that went along with that theme. What I came up with were these DIY Kitchen Towels that I think will be perfect to display when people come over!

This week I'm traveling visiting friends in North Carolina, so I asked my sweet blog bestie Teresa to share a fun DIY for foodies! These tea towels make the perfect hostess gift or just a fun addition to your modern farmhouse kitchen! She's also shared the design cut file so you can make your own towels. Please share some love with her on her blog as well 🙂

Hey y'all, I'm Teresa and I blog over at Simply Made Fun! I love to share craft projects with a special focus on paper cutting machines (like the Silhouette Cameo), and I'm really excited to be here today to share the perfect hostess gift DIY kitchen towels with all of you! It's such an easy craft to do and they make the perfect housewarming gift for the foodies in our lives.

When my mom sold the house we grew up in she asked what we'd like to take with us. The first (and really only) thing I wanted was our dining room set. It's huge, wooden, and can hold eight people, and I knew that if I wanted to host holidays at our house it would be the perfect table for it.

Gathering around the dining room table with friends and family has always been my favorite part of hosting people in our home. We've made a lot of memories there and will continue to do it for years to come! It's true when people say the kitchen (and dining room!) are the hearts of the home.

How-To

PRO TIP: Make sure your design is mirrored before you cut it out! You want it to be backwards so that when you place it on your flour sack in the later steps it will read the right way.

+ Download and open up these files in your Silhouette Software.

+ Cut them out and weed the designs. Set them aside.

+ Heat up your iron. While it's heating up fold your flour sacks and iron down the creases. This will help you center your design when you place it in the next step.

+ Line up your design on the flour sack. Place your teflon sheet or pillowcase on top of your design and then press your hot iron on top of it. Press the iron down on your design for 45-60 seconds, make sure you press hard!

+ Lift up the teflon sheet (or pillowcase) and peel up the transfer sheet that's on top of the vinyl. If you notice that some of the design isn't sticking to the flour sack, lay the layers back down on the design and press for another 45-60 seconds with your iron. Continue doing this until your entire design is adhered to the flour sack!

  5. HI. I'm wondering what vinyl you used? The result is almost vintage looking. When I do HTV, the colors are dark and crisp. Did you use a special HTV or apply something to it to make it look faded and distressed?

    1. Hi Carrie! The pictures do make the vinyl look a little more faded, but in person it's a crisp black! I always use oracle 651, for this project I used both black and silver for both towels!

        1. I misspoke. Thanks for pointing that out!

I always use htv, which is what you should use for iron on vinyl!

  6. So cute! Flour sack cloths are my absolute favorite in the kitchen, so these would be a fantastic hostess gift.

    1. Hi Pam! Yes, you should always wash and dry any type of fabric item before applying the vinyl. Make sure to skip the fabric softener though, that can cause vinyl to not stick to the fabric. 🙂

  7. Oh, what a fun and friendly idea to make this for a hostess! I love the idea of making one of these towels, and I'm definitely going to do this in the future.

    1. Thank you so much Erin! If you make one, please come back and share. I'd love to see what you do with them!
